Andrea Young, with Silvera for Seniors, is a recent member of the Trico Changemakers Studio. When she settled into Trico Studio three months ago, she was working full force on how to apply evidence based research to evaluate, develop, and innovate existing practices and programs at Silvera for Seniors. But with the current pandemic, the change in her role was inevitable.

Silvera for Seniors operates 25 buildings with residents of an average age of 85 years. As we have seen from countries such as Italy, seniors are the most vulnerable to COVID-19, and Andrea being at the frontline has embraced big changes to her work. Her research has presently moved to focus on: the impact of long-term involuntary isolation on seniors, and the mental health needs of residents and staff.

On a brief follow up with Andrea she mentioned: “We are hoping that, by looking at the impacts of previous pandemics and disasters, we can be proactive and intentional with our interventions and planning for the future.”

While the subject matter of her research has taken a turn, the standard for impact still remains the same for Andrea. For her it’s about taking what is learned from research (the theory), moving that into practical knowledge so that it can be translated into action.
